Arsenal-2 Blackburn-1: Today's early game pitted Arsenal against a physical Blackburn team at Ewood Park. Arsenal struck first in the game, with a 20th minute goal from Theo Walcott. Walcott great low strike settled into the side netting. Walcott has been great so far for the Gunners.
Blackburn equalized just seven minutes later. Mame Biram Diouf tapped the ball past Arsenal keeper Manuel Alumunia. Diouf did a great job finding open space in the box and seeking out the cross. Andrey Arshavin quieted the Rovers fans in the 51st minute with a goal off a deflection. Cesc Fabregas had a shot deflected, and it bounced right to Arshavin, who put it away. Arsenal wore down Blackburn with their passing and possession for the rest of the game.
Blackpool-2 Fulham-2: Very evenly matched game, each team getting their chances to score. Fulham forward Bobby Zamora capitalized on a chance in the 35th minute, when he leapt up to meat the ball with his head, and put it into the goal. Zamora did have to leave the game with an injury in the second half. Fulham was hit with more own-goal bad luck in the 71st minute, when a ball deflected into the net off defender John Pantsil.
The game swung dramatically late, starting with that own goal. Blackpool forward Luke Varney, who was involved in the own goal, put his team on top in the 76th minute. A complete turnaround now saw Fulham a goal down. Dickson Etuhu made sure Fulham could at least get a draw, when he chipped the ball over Blackpool keeper Matthew Gilks.
Chelsea-2 Stoke City-0: Although Chelsea only scored two goals this week against the Stoke City, make no mistake, they dominated this game. Florent Malouda, continuing his good form, opening the scoring in the 32nd minute. He was released by a pass from John Terry, and put the ball past the keeper.
Chelsea scored their second goal on a penalty in the 76th minute. Ironically, Chelsea were awarded a penalty in the 11th minute, but keeper Thomas Sorensen saved the attempt. Didier Drogba buried the second penalty into the back of the net. While this win wasn't as dominant as Chelsea's recent performance, they still have 9 points in three games.
Wigan-1 Tottenham-0: This is the most shocking upset of the Premier League so far. Wigan, who were utterly destroyed in their first two matches, edged out a win at White Hart Lane. Wigan were powered by an outstanding match from keeper Ali Al Habsi. The game remained scoreless until the 80th because of the many great saves made by Al Habsi.
Hugo Rodallega scored the game winner in the 80th minute. Rodallega found some space and fired the ball past Spurs keeper Carlo Cudicini. This was an epic moment for Wigan, the first bright spot in their season. As for Tottenham, they should be deeply disappointed to have lost to such a team at home.
Wolves-1 Newcastle-1: Wolves have continued to play solid football, and as a result, have not lost a game yet. Even though they managed only one shot on goal (six total), they were able to work a draw out of Newcastle. Newcastle had many more chances to score, but were only able to cash in once.
Wolves opened the scoring late in the first half, when Sylvan Ebanks-Blake put one in on a volley. Newcastle rallied back and finally scored in the 62nd minute. Andrew Carroll headed home the equalizer off a set piece taken by Joey Barton.
Manchester United-3 West Ham-0: Man United dealt very easily with West Ham United today at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney ended his 13-match scoreless streak in the 33rd minute. Ryan Giggs was brought down in the box, and Rooney deposited the ball from the penalty spot. Nani, who had a terrific game, scored the second goal in the 50th when Man United blasted through the West Ham defense. Nani finished it off with a nice strike.
The third goal was one of the better goals of the Premier League season so far. Nani crossed the ball into the box and right to Dimitar Berbatov. Berbatov performed a magnificent scissor-kick move and the ball whizzed into the net. West Ham better pick up the pace or we could see them down in the Championship this time next year.

Fulham Late Equalizer Stuns Man United
Manchester United and Fulham competed in a thrilling game contested at Craven Cottage. The game took two dramatic turns in the last ten minutes. The game ended in a 2-2 tie, a deserved point for each team. Fulham yet again has stymied Manchester United at Craven Cottage.
Manchester United jumped out to an early lead in the 11th minute, when Paul Scholes, from 30 yards out, drove a low strike into the corner of the net. Scholes received a perfect pass from Dimitar Berbatov, who had his back to the goal. Scholes has been terrific early on this season.
Fulham had some chances to score in the first half but failed to. United keeper Edwin Van der Saw made several key saves in the game, but Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale was just as good. Stockdale would make the most important save of the match late in the game.
Simon Davies tied the game for Fulham in the 57th minute. Damien Duff started the attack by beating Patrice Evra with a nice move, then gave the ball to Zamora, who fed Davies. Davies had a nice finish, securing the ball in the back of the net.
The two teams looked evenly matched until late in the game. United took the lead in the 84th minute, when a corner from Ryan Giggs defelcted off Brede Hangeland and into the back of the net. Horrible moment for Hangeland, scoring an own goal is the worst for a defender. He would get his revenge, however.
Manchester United blew a chance to go up two just two minutes later. A penalty was awarded to United, when Damien duff had a ball hit his thigh then deflect off his hand in the penalty area. It looked as though United would surely earn three points from this game. Nani was chosen to take the shot, and he hit a strike towards the goal post. Stockdale made a great save on the shot, but really Nani should have done better.
Fulham would make Manchester United pay for missing that chance to extend their lead. Duff again was involved in Fulham's equalizer in the 89th minute. Duff guided a corner into the heads, and Brede Hangeland put the header past Van der Sar. Fulham fans rejoiced as Brede Hangeland certainly redeemed himself from his mistake just five minutes earlier.
Fulham showed great resilience, coming back to tie the game twice. They showed they can really battle with the top clubs at home. Traveling to Craven Cottage is never an easy experience for any club and Fulham proved that today. As for Manchester United, this might be one of those games they look back on at the end of the season if they don't win the league.

Premier League Rundown: 8/21
Birmingham City-2 Blackburn Rovers-1: This was a thrilling game at St Andrews Stadium in Birmingham, and the home side came out on top. Birmingham City goalkeeper Ben Foster made a magnificent save on a penalty. Morten Gamst Pedersen was on the receiving end of the save in the 50th minute, and that was a big moment in the game.
Blackburn did take the lead a few minutes later however, when a header from Steven Nzonzi found the back of the net. Birmingham city rallied back to when it though. Craig Gardner was the hero, scoring two great goals in the 57th and 71st minutes.
Everton-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers-1: Althought Everton controlled the ball for most of the game, Wolves were able to come away from Goodison Park with a point. Tim Cahill scored for Everton late in the first half, but Wolves equalized on a goal from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake in the 74th minute.
Everton have to be disappointed with their performance today. This are the kinds of games they have to win (especially at home) if they hope to finish in the top-10 at the end of the year. Wolves will be thrilled to get a result in this one.
Tottenham Hotspur-2 Stoke City-1: Another close, thrilling game took place at Britannia Stadium. Gareth Bale opened the scoring in the 19th minute, when a ball deflected off his face and into the net. Stoke came back and equalized, when Ricardo Fuller scored in the 25th minute. Gareth Bale, five minutes later, put Tottenham up for good with his second goal of the game. It was a terrific volley from Bale.
Now comes the controversy. Stoke, trying to equalize late in the game, appeared to have put the ball across the line but it was ruled not a goal. Jon Walters, making his debut, headed the ball towards the net. It was cleared by Peter Crouch but looked to go over the line first. Unfortunately for Stoke, the referee ruled no goal on the play.
West Bromwich-1 Sunderland-0: This game, while not as exciting as the others, was just as close. West Brom and Sunderland battled it out and both failed to score until West Brom took the lead in the 81st minute. Peter Odemwingle was the hero for West Brom.
This is a great bounce back game for West Brom, who were thrashed 6-0 by Chelsea last weekend.
Bolton-3 West Ham-1: West Ham's bad luck has continued. It started in the 33rd minute, when Carlton Cole kicked his penalty shot right into the arms of Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelanien. The misery continued when Matthew Upson netted an own goal in the 48th minute. West Ham really have to start playing better if they want to stay in the Premier League.
As for Bolton, Johan Elmander was the star, scoring two goals and leading Bolton to the win.
Chelsea-6 Wigan-0: Think about this stat: Chelsea's goal differential this season is 12 goals scored and 0 goals against. Wigan's goal differential is 0 goals scored and 10 goals against. That basically tells the story of this game. Chelsea dominated all game, and Wigan struggled yet again.
Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou each scored two goals for Chelsea.

Arsenal Score Six in Win
Hat trick hero Theo Walcott (uploaded by Ronnie Macdonald on flickr) |
Walcott was the one who broke the scoreless tie in the 12th minute with a smartly hit ball that rolled into the corner of the net. Walcott looked great in this game, moving through the defense with exceptional speed and agility. Arsenal hope that Walcott can finally fulfill his huge expectations.
The turning point in the game came in the 31st minute, when Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh was brought down on the edge of the penalty area. Ian Evatt slid into Chamakh from behind and missed the ball on a clear scoring chance. Evatt was shown a red card, and Arsenal was awarded penalty. It looked as though contact was made just outside the box, but nevertheless, it was ruled a penalty.
Andrey Arshavin scored on the penalty, putting Arsenal up by two. It was all Gunners after that. Arsenal controlled the ball for the rest of the game, passing it around with easy. Abou Diaby and Chamakh also scored for Arsenal, in addition to Walcott's three lethal strikes.
Blackpool looked really sloppy and sluggish after going down a man. They hadn't played all that bad up until that point, but they collapsed under the constant pressure from Arsenal. Ian Holloway may not have thought that his team would win this game, but he certainly didn't expect to lose embarrassingly 6-0.
Cesc Fabregas and Robbie Van Persie both came in in the second half, and looked very well and fit. Both players have not been starting for Arsenal because they are trying to recover their fitness after playing in the World Cup. In, fact Fabregas and Van Persie played in the World Cup Final. Hopefully, those key players will be able to withstand heavier minutes as the weeks go on.
Overall, this is a great win for Arsenal (talk about goal differential). After beating Wigan 4-0 last week, this has to be a disappointing performance for Blackpool. They must get over it if they want to stay in the Premier League for any length of time.

Tottenham Grabs Gallas
Former Arsenal defender William Gallas is getting set to join Tottenham Hotspur. Not a far move for the 30-year old; he will be staying in North London. Gallas, for his own sake, better not make any crucial mistakes in his first couple Tottenham outings. Fans already know he has one strike against him for being a former Arsenal player.
This was a free transfer for Spurs because Gallas' contract was up at Arsenal. Gallas is reportedly going to undergo a medical assessment tomorrow, before officially joining Tottenham over the weekend. It is not yet clear on the terms of the contract.
Gallas will surely help solidify the Tottenham back line. He has been a world class defender for years, but will his age start to catch up with him. At 33, he is no longer in his prime. Most players start to decline when they turn 30. Tottenham are hoping that Gallas still has some good years left.

Man U Out to a Flying Start
Manchester United faced off against Newcastle United at Old Trafford. Man U clobbered newly promoted Newcastle, 3-0. It was an easy opening fixture for the Reds, but at least they lived up to expectations by trouncing Newcastle. Newcastle looked good early in the game, but Manchester United dominated from then on.
Newcastle got the first real scoring chance in the game, when an header from Andy Carrol went wide. It was off a corner, and Carrol hit it well, but it was just to the left. Carrol was the one bright spot for Newcastle playing up top.
Manchester United broke through in the 33rd minute, when Dimitar Berbatov hit a very accurate strike into the corner. It was a tough angle, and a superb finish from the Bulgarian. Berbatov performed well alongside Wayne Rooney in the first half. Sir Alex should consider using the two striker formation again, instead of using Rooney as the lone man of top.
Rooney, who was taken out in second half, did contribute to United's second goal of the half. An inadvertent touch by Rooney rolled to Darren Fletcher. Flecther depsited the ball in the back of the net from close range.
The Reds' third goal was by far the best of the game. Paul Scholes, who had yet another magnificent game, crossed the ball to Ryan Giggs, who came in as a substitute. Giggs, who has played in every Premier League season, volleyed the ball into the back of the net. A beautiful left footed volley across the goal and into the corner of the net. Giggs has also scored in every Premier League season.
This is a game Manchester United should have won, especially at home, and they did. Man U had 66% of the possession, and dominant Newcastle. It was a flying start for the Reds, and Sir Alex will be pleased.

Arsenal-Liverpool 1-1 Draw to Open Season
Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina (uploaded by Nigel Wilson on flickr) |
The premier match up in the Premier League this weekend was Arsenal vs. Liverpool today. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, with each team playing with ten men when the game finished. It was an exciting game, and both teams will be pleased to gain a point from their opening game.
Arsenal dominated possession in the first 45, passing the ball around with fluidity. They were not able to get many scoring chances. Liverpool's new signing Joe Cole got a straight red card in the 45th minute. Cole slid in late on Arsenal center back Laurent Koscielny. It was a play that could have seriously injured Koscielny, who was carried off on a stretcher. He did return in the second half
Going down to men on the pitch seemed to help Liverpool get their play going in the second half. In the 46th minute, David Ngog broke away from the defenders and blasted a shot past Manuel Almunia. Great strike from Ngog into the top netting, but the goal was caused by an Arsenal mistake. Young English midfielder Jack Wilshere made a bad pass deep in the defensive zone, and that lead to Ngog's goal.
Arsenal, a man up, struggled to tie the game up until their 90th minute goal. Tomas Rosicky, who came in as a sub, hit a great ball right on the edge of the penalty area. Pepe Reina made a great save on that one, which drew the cheers of the fans at Anfield. Only a few minutes later, those same fans would be jeering Reina mercilessly.
Arsenal's equalizer came on an own goal by the keeper Reina in the 90th minute. An Arsenal cross came in, which was misplayed by Reina. Then the Gunners new striker Marouane Chamakh hit the post. The ball deflected right back to Reina, who fumbled the ball into the net. It was a tragic moment for Liverpool, but a relieving one for Arsenal.
Ironically, Laurent Kocsielny picked up a second yellow and subsequent red in extra time. Liverpool had one last shot to make the home fans happy in extra time. A laser of a free kick by Frank Lampard was pushed away by Alumnia.
Both team will be somewhat pleased with the results. A point is a point, and you don't want to go into the second week with no points. Arsenal performed alright, escpecially considering some of their top players started the game on the bench. The young guys did well.
Liverpool will be disappointed they could not hold onto the win, but they have to be happy about how they played once they went a man down. Overall, a controversial and mistake filled game. Exactly what you would expect in a opening game.

Premier League Rundown: 8/14
Here are the games that took place earlier today:
Aston Villa-3 West Ham United-0: I saw a little of this game, and Villa dominated right from the start. West Ham only managed to get one shot on goal, while logged a remarkable 16 corners. Stewart Downing and Stiliyan Petrov scored for Villa in the first half, while James Milner scored maybe his last goal for Villa in the 66th minute. The fans at Villa Park cheered Milner for possibly one last time before his was subbed in the 85th minute.
Marc Albrighton also received mass appraise from the fans after he assisted on a goal and recorded three shots.
Blackburn Rovers-1 Everton-0: Everton controlled this game, but a stumble by American goalkeeper Tim Howard cost Everton the game. Howard attempted to clear the ball, but muffed it, and it fell to the feet of Nikola Kilinic. Kilinic slotted the ball home, and that was the difference in the game.
Everton had chances to tie the game. They took 21shots, but only four of them were on goal. Everton had 70% of the possession, but were not able to capitalize on it. Ultimately, Everton will be disappointed with their start of the season. Blackburn, on the other hand, will be thrilled to come away with three points.
Bolton Wanderers-0 Fulham-0: This was a very evenly matched game, and the scoreline suggests that. David Stockdale filled in admirably for Mark Schwarzer in goal. Schwarzer has made it clear he wants to go to Arsenal, and he'll probably end up there. American Stuart Holden had a good game for Bolton, almost scoring but falling just short.
Sunderland-2 Birmingham-2: Sunderland thought they had the game all wrapped up after gaining a two goal lead in the 56th minute. Even though Sunderland lost Lee Cattermole to a red card in the 43rd minute, the game looked locked up. It was not to be however, as Birmingham stormed back and tied it in the final minutes.
Darren Bent scored from the penalty spot to open the scoring in the 24th minute. Birmingham cut the lead in half in the 77th minute with a goal from the head of Scott Dann. Liam Ridgewell was the hero for Birmingham, tying it in the 88th minute. Both sides will be disappointed. Sunderland because of the red card and the collapse. Birmingham because of the questionable penalty call.
Blackpool-4 Wigan-0: Blackpool smashed Wigan and sealed this game early on. This is a shock win for the many of us who wrote Blackpool off. Again, I did predict that Wigan would be relegated this year, but I did not think Blackpool would utterly destroy them.
Marlon Harewood was the Man of the Match, scoring two goals and assisting on another. Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Alex Baptiste also scored in Blackpool's first game in the top flight since the 70's. Manager Ian Holloway will be proud.
Wolverhampton Wanderers-2 Stoke City-1: Steven Fletcher had a joyous debut with Wolves today, scoring a goal in the 39th to put his club up two. Only two minutes earlier, David Jones hit the net to open the scoring. Stoke City showed some promise but struggled when Kenwyne Jones was subbed out due to injury.
Great start for Wolves at home. These are the kinds of games they need to win to stay afloat in the Premier League.
Chelsea-6 West Bromwich-0: Chelsea came out flying in their opening game today, destroying newly promoted West Bromwich Albion. Man of the Match Didier Drogba netted a hat trick in the game. Florent Malouda netted two goals himself. Frank Lampard also found the back of the net at Stamford Bridge.
This was too be expected from the defending champions, but it is still a good sign. Chelsea's preseason struggles clearly have not carried over into the season.

Tottenham Draws With Man City
In the first Premier League match of the season, Manchester City and Tottenham failed too score a goal at White Hart Lane. The star of the game was Man City goaltender Joe Hart, who keep Tottenham off the score sheets with some remarkable stops. It was a good start of the season for Man City, earning a point on the road. Tottenham fans will be disappointed that their team couldn't break through against City.
The first half was dominated by the Spurs. Jermaine Defoe terrorized the Manchester City defense, but couldn't beat Hart. Defoe twisted his hips and unleashed a wicked shot. I don't know how Hart reacted quick enough to make the save but he somehow did.
Gareth Bale had a played a good game for Tottenham but missed a sure goal late in the game. A cross aimed at Robbie Keane was deflected by Hart and bounced right back out to Bale. Bale's not too good with his off foot (right). and he muffed a kick wide.
Manchester City can't be too pleased with how they played, despite earning a point. There defense was lackadaisical in the first half, and their offense managed only two shots on goal. Hart was the one bright spot. He had been in a battle with Shay Given for the starting position, but that battle may be over for the time being.
Tottenham looked good despite the 0-0 draw. Their offense was fluid and their defense was tough. I was personally impressed with Benoit Assou-Ekotto.
Joe Hart told Sky Sports that he does not consider himself the #1 goalie at City, even with his Man of the Match performance today. He went on to praise Shay Given and say about today's game(all quotes from skysports.com): "It was just an enjoyable day. I love playing football and it was great to be involved."

Premier League Predictions: 10-1
Here is a link to #20-11. So here is the top-10:
10. Fulham
Manager: Mark Hughes
2009/10 Finish: 12th
Players to Watch: Clint Dempsey, Bobby Zamora, Zoltan Gera
Preview: Mark Hughes is taking over Fulham after Roy Hodgson left for Liverpool. He has a talented squad, and he will be able to please the Fulham fans with a top-10 finish, but just barely. Fulham does have an American connection in Clint Dempsey, on of the best U.S. players.
9. Sunderland
Manager: Steve Bruce
2009/10 Finish: 13th
Players to Watch: Darren Bent, Jordan Henderson, Kieran Richardson
Preview: Sunderland is a very good squad, they will surprise many people by finishing in the top-10 this season. They have a huge scoring threat in Darren Bent up top. Jordan Henderson is a terrific young midfielder. Also, Sunderland have money to spend. They haven't spent it yet, but maybe by the second transfer window. This will be a successful season for Sunderland.
8. Aston Villa
Manager: Caretaker Boss Kevin MacDonald
2009/10 Finish: 6th
Players to Watch: Emil Heskey, Richard Dunne, Nathan Delfouneso
Preview: Villa is sinking fast in the ocean known as the Premier League. With Martin O'Neil quitting a week before the season, plus the eminent sale of star player James Milner. I was tempted to put Aston Villa even farther down in the table, but I can't. They still have some good young players mixed with reliable veterans. As far as I'm concerned, Milner is already on Man City. This will be a disappointing season for Villa because they will miss out on European competition.
7. Everton
Manager: David Moyes
2009/10 Finish: 8th
Players to Watch: Louis Saha, Phil Jagielka, Phil Neville
Preview: Everton are a very interesting club. They have a solid squad all around. Everton are just off the top-6 teams. There will be some separation there. Everton do have an American connection with goaltender Tim Howard, one of the best goalies in the league. Good news: Europa League. Bad news: just the Europa League.
6. Tottenham
Manager: Harry Redknapp
2009/10 Finish: 4th
Players to Watch: Luca Modric, Ledley King, Robbie Keane
Preview: Okay, it's no secret I don't like Tottenham, but that is not why I think they will drop two spots from last season. With Man City improving by the day, Tottenham will just not be able to keep up. Hey look to the bright side: more Europa League.
5. Manchester City
Manager: Roberto Mancini
2009/10 Finish: 5th
Players to Watch: Carlos Tevez, Robinho, Emmanuel Adebayor
Preview: Manchester City is trying the old "buy a championship" approach. I could type every player they've brought/bringing in, but I'm not going to do it. A collection of star players, assembled on a field, having barely played with one another, doesn't lead to success. Just ask team England.
4. Liverpool
Manager: Roy Hodgson
2009/10 Finish: 7th
Players to Watch: Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres
Preview: Last season was a fluke for Liverpool. They have a good team. They just need to put it together. Even with a "takeover" imminent at Anfield, the addition of Joe Cole and Christian Poulsen, will help them get back into the top four. That said, they will not compete for the title, as there will be a sizable game between Liverpool, Man City, and Tottenham and the top 3.
3. Chelsea
Manager: Carlos Ancelotti
2009/10 Finish: 1st
Players to Watch: Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, Michael Essien
Preview: Last season's winners will not repeat as champions this season. The injury bug tends to affect older teams, and Chelsea is certainly getting older. Last season was a last hurrah for the Frank Lampard-John Terry lead team. They still have a good squad, and will contend for the title until the final month of the season.
2. Arsenal
Manager: Arsene Wenger
2009/10 Finish: 3rd
Players to Watch: Cesc Fabregas, Aaron Ramsey, Andre Arshavin
Preview: Wenger's contract runs out at the end of the season. Now, as of posting this, no extension has been agreed upon, but Wenger says one is close. Arsenal need to win some hardware this season to justify a Wenger extension. They can win the Premier League if they can stay healthy, but that just hasn't happened in recent years. They may not win the Premier League, but they may win hardware.
1. Manchester United
Manager: Sir Alex Ferguson
2009/10 Finish: 2nd
Players to Watch: Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra, Javier Hernandez
Preview: They have one of the best finishers in the Premier League in Wayne Rooney; One of the best young players in Javier Hernandez; One of the best veteran playmakers in Paul Scholes. All of that plus more makes up the best team in the Premiership. They have a blazing counter attack that usually ends in a through ball to Rooney, and you know the rest. United will be Champions once again, but it won't be by a big margin.
Fulham does have an American connection in Clint Dempsey, on of the best U.S. players.

Premier League Predictions: 20-11
Here are my 2010/11 Premier League predictions and previews. I will be going in reverse order, starting with the the team I think will finish last up until #11 for this post. Later in the week, I will post who I think will finish in the top 10 in the league table. Enjoy.
20. Blackpool
Manager: Ian Holloway
2009/10 Finish: Promoted
Players to Watch: Neil Eardley, Brett Ormerod, Charlie Adam
Preview: Blackpool are just happy to be up in the top league. Many newly promoted teams like to keep a tight budget for players. Blackpool is no different. The most they've ever spent for a player is £500,000. The big four teams pay 12-year old youth players that amount. Almost all the players on Blackpool's roster are from the UK or Ireland.
While Blackpool have a good manager in Holloway, their roster is just not up to Premier League standards. I have a feeling they will be back in the Championship next season.
19. West Bromwich Albion
Manager: Roberto Di Matteo
2009/10 Finish: Promoted
Players to Watch: Yossuf Mulumbu, Graham Dorrans, Chris Wood
Preview: West Brom are more prepared to face the Premier League than Blackpool. That said, I still think they will be relegated. The "Baggies" have a more experienced roster than Blackpool, and have a small chance to stick around in the Premier League.
18. Wigan Athletic
Manager: Roberto Martinez
2009/10 Finish: 16th
Players to Watch: Emmerson Boyce, Chris Kirkland, Charles N'Zogbia
Preview: I think Wigan were lucky to avoid relegation last season. Their goal differential was worst in the EPL last season at -42. I don't think they'll be so lucky this season.
17. West Ham United
Manager: Avram Grant
2009/10 Finish: 17th
Players to Watch: Scott Parker, Matthew Upson, Robert Green
Preview: West Ham just avoided an relegation last season. Of course, 17th wasn't their ideal finish. They do have some quality players however. Captain Matthew Upson started center back at center back for the English national team in the World Cup. Green gave up that soft goal against the USA, which lead to a 1-1 draw. West Ham will just escape relegation this season.
16. Newcastle United
Manager: Chris Hughton
2009/10 Finish: Promoted
Players to Watch: Kevin Nolan, Sol Campbell, Nile Ranger
Preview: After bringing in Sol Campbell from Arsenal, Newcastle basically have no money for any more players. That said, they still have a decent enough squad to stick around in the Premier League. Newcastle gained their promotion by winning the Championship. They will avoid relegation, but they will not finish higher than hated rival Sunderland.
15. Wolverhampton Wanderers
Manager: Andy Dalziel
2009/10 Finish: 15th
Players to Watch: Kevin Doyle, Michael Kightly, Ashley Hemmings
Preview: Wolves surprised many by avoiding relegation last season. This season they are expected to stay in the league as they try to become a Premier League mainstay. They brought in Stephen Fletcher to play with Irishman Kevin Doyle up front. Wolves may surprise some people again this season.
14. Stoke City
Manager: Tony Pulis
2009/10 Finish: 11th
Players to Watch: Ricardo Fuller, Matthew Etherington, Rory Delap
Preview: Stoke terrorized Arsenal and Man City in in the F.A. Cup and finished 11th in the table. Everyone was shocked by Stoke City last year and Rory Delap's long throw-ins. That will not be the case this season. Teams that took Stoke lightly last season will not this season.
13. Birmingham City
Manager: Alex McLeish
2009/10 Finish: 9th
Players to Watch: Ben Foster, Roger Johnson, Stephen Carr
Preview: Birmingham had a great season in 09/10. Ben Foster will have to come up HUGE if Birmingham hope to crack the top 10 this season. Joe Hart, on loan from Man City, saved Birmingham time and time again last season. Birmingham will return back to earth this season.
12. Bolton Wanderers
Manager: Owen Coyle
2009/10 Finish: 14th
Players to Watch: Lee Chung-yong, Kevin Davies, Gary Cahill
Preview: Bolton finished a disappointing 14th last season. Acquiring Martin Petrov will help them, but they will still not get into the top 10. They need more young talent to inject some creativity into the side.
11. Blackburn Rovers
Manager: Sam Allardyce
2009/10 Finish: 10th
Players to Watch: El Hadji Diouf, Steven Nzonzi, Phil Jones
Preview: Blackburn have a lot of young talent. That is great for the future of the club, until bigger clubs snatch them away that is.
Check in tomorrow for my prediction as to who will finish in the top 10 in the Premier League.

Aston Villa Manager Quits
Martin O'Neill resigned today (uploaded by dalli58 on flickr) |
This is an incredible shakeup at Villa. This is a team who has finished 6th the last three seasons under Martin O'Neill. Kevin MacDonald has been named caretaker manager for Villa in the meantime.
Here is a O'Neill about his time at Aston Villa (all quotes acquired from skysports.com): "I have enjoyed my time at Aston Villa immensely.
"It's obviously a wrench to be leaving such a magnificent club. I would like to pay tribute to the Villa players, my coaching staff and the Villa supporters for all the support and encouragement they have given both the club and me personally during my time as manager.
"I wish them all the best for the future. I will obviously be assisting the club in the immediate short-term with regard to the handover of my duties."
Here is Paul Faulkner, chief executive of Villa: "The club would like to thank Martin for the great work he has done at Aston Villa over the past four years.
"He has helped to establish the club in the upper echelons of the Premier League, has taken us to Wembley and we have also qualified for European competition for the past three seasons under his management. We wish him the best in the future."
Another statement released from the club said, "No further comment will be made by either Aston Villa or Martin O'Neill until further notice."
It is likely that O'Neill disagreed with head management over the clubs future regarding personnel decision. O'Neill set a goal to break into the top four, and was not happy when Villa sold Gareth Barry. Whatever the reason, Aston Villa have to get things together before the weekend if they wish to have a successful season.
Toure: "Premier League is Amazing"
Manchester City has made a huge splash in the transfer market recently. One of their biggest moves was paying £22 million for midfielder Yaya Toure. Toure, the Ivory Coast international, spent three seasons at Barcelona before making a move to join his brother Kolo at Man City.
Some may perceive Toure's move from Barcelona as a step down for his career. Of course Yaya doesn't think that himself. Here is Toure (all quotes acquired from soccernet.espn.com): "I don't think this is a step down.
"The Premier League is amazing. It is stronger than La Liga. And Manchester City are making great strides within it. In future they will be a big club. Every team in every country is starting to talk about the club. They know we are signing good, important players and I want to do my bit. I don't feel pressure. I do have a lot of experience and I am determined to do my very best to make this club successful.''
"When you sign for any team, the most important thing is the contact you have with the trainer. When they do something and they put pressure on in some way to sign you it is very important. When you don't talk with the trainer it is bad. That is why I came to Manchester City. We have a fantastic coach and we are signing good players. It will be great here this year.
"I love the Premier League. I have always wanted to play here. The biggest players play here. People like Steven Gerrard and my biggest friend Didier Drogba. Physically it is good. You have to be strong and I am thirsty to do well here. There are so many big teams - Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and the rest. But City are here now and maybe for United that is not so nice because we are making good progress. I really want to see how they do against us.''
The Premier League is definitely a deeper league than La Liga, although I do think Barcelona is the best club in the world. In La Liga, it's basically a competition between Barcelona and Real Madrid for the top spot. Wile in the Premier League, there are four or five teams that can go out and win the league right now.
In the last two years Manchester City have acquired Shay Given, Nigel De Jong, Craig Bellamy, Gareth Barry, Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure, Patrick Viera, Yaya Toure, David Silva, and Jerome Boateng. This team has bought itself into contention for the top four spots in the league. They have great players, but can they put it together as a team and win games?
Some may perceive Toure's move from Barcelona as a step down for his career. Of course Yaya doesn't think that himself. Here is Toure (all quotes acquired from soccernet.espn.com): "I don't think this is a step down.

Man U Downs Chelsea in Community Shield
Man of the Match Paul Scholes (uploaded by gordonflood.com on flickr) |
Manchester United beat Chelsea 3-1 in today's Community Shield match at Wembley Stadium. The Reds opened up the scoring in the 41rst minute with a goal from Antonio Valencia. Wayne Rooney, who played the first half, made a brilliant cross to Valencia, who slotted home the first goal of the match.
The second goal came in the 76th minute from Man U's newest member Javier Hernandez (Chicharito). After sneaking behind Ashley Cole, Valencia crossed the ball to Hernandez. The ball deflected off Chicharito's foot and then his face before finding the back of the net.
I think Hernandez was a great signing by Manchester United because of the raw talent he brings to the field. He clearly has goal-scoring ability and I think he could be a valuable sub for Sir Alex Ferguson when he needs more offense. He will have to compete with Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov for the second striker behind Wayne Rooney.
Chelsea, who have lost their last four preseason friendlies, did show some life late in the game. Solomon Kalou put home a rebound off a shot from Daniel Sturridge in the 83rd minute. Down only one goal, Chelsea turned on the burners and had chances to net a equaliser but they failed to account for Manchester United's world class counter attack.
Dimitar Berbatov sealed the deal for United in the 90th minute, when he lifted a beautiful chip over the head of Chelsea keeper Henrique Hilario. Berbatov has impressed me in these preseason matches, maybe making a case to start alongside Rooney at some point during the season.
The crowd roared in the 60th minute, when Didier Drogba came into the game as a substitution. Drogba, who lead the premier league in goals last season, did not make a huge impact on the game however. He made a few nifty moves and had one shot hit the side netting, but Man U's interior defense snuffed out most passes heading his way.
Here is United defender Nemanja Vidic on the match (all quotes acquired from soccernet.espn.go.com): "It's important to me," he told Sky Sports. "This is the last game before the season and I think we did well today. Obviously a few players didn't play a lot in pre-season and they had the chance today to build up their fitness and they did well.
"I believe there will be more (trophies). This is just the beginning. I think we have a good squad and we showed we have the energy and we showed some hunger as well and this is very important to be the champions."
Here is man of the match Paul Scholes, who continues to defy logic with his great passing even at age 35: "It was a good game and we're happy with the win. It's more of a pre-season friendly but it's a trophy, we've managed to win it and we're more than happy to do that.
"It's always good to beat Chelsea. They are a quality side who beat us three times last year. That's disappointing but we've got off to the right start this year.
"We weren't that far off last year - just one point in the league. With more determination this year hopefully we can go one step further."
This was an exciting match to watch, even though it's still the preseason. Two quality sides played hard and clearly wanted the victory. The intensity in this match just makes me more excited about what's to come when the premier league kicks off next weekend.

Everton Locks Up Arteta
Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta has signed a 5-year deal with the club. Arteta has been the subject of transfer rumors, which had many English and Spanish teams trying to pry the crafty playmaker away from Everton. This is great news for Everton fans, who hope to see their club build on last season's 8th place finish.
Here is Arteta's comments about his new deal with Everton (all quotes acquired from skysports.com): "What this summer has made me realise is how important I am to the club and how important the club is to me.
"The chairman and the manager wanted me to stay 120 per cent and that makes me feel proud. We are all seeing the club and the future in the same way and that is special - something that you don't always find.
"I believe in this squad. We have got a very strong squad now and it is getting difficult to pick an 11 because of the players we have. Something is happening here and I want to be a part of it."
Here is Everton chairman Bill Kenwright on Arteta and the club in general: "Mikel Arteta is one of the finest players ever to wear an Everton shirt and over the past few weeks his pride in wearing that shirt has helped our conversations hugely. Alongside several others in the squad we are both passionate Evertonians.
"After already tying up the likes of Tim Cahill, Jack Rodwell, Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman on long-term deals we have now agreed terms with one of the finest and most influential players in our recent history."
It is clear that Everton are determined to sustain their title as a top-10 mainstay in the Premiership.

Cesc Commits to Arsenal
Cesc Fabregas has committed to staying with Arsenal. Fabregas released a statement yesterday saying that he has finally made his decision to stay in North London. This is great news for Arsenal, but a big blow to Barcelona, who expected to see Cesc come back to Spain.
Here is a statement from Fabregas (all quotes and statements acquired from soccernet.espn.go.com): "Firstly I would like to apologise to all the Arsenal fans for not speaking sooner about my future but I have not known what I was going to do until this moment.
"I cannot deny that joining a club like Barcelona was not an attractive move for me.
"This was the club where I learnt my football, it is my home town where my friends and family are and a club where I have always dreamed of playing. There are not many players in the world who would not want to play for Barcelona.
"I have had many conversations with Arsene Wenger both in person and over the phone over the last few months and although the content of those conversations will remain private, the conclusion is that Barcelona have had two formal offers rejected by Arsenal.
"I am a professional and I fully understand that it is Arsenal's prerogative not to sell me. I owe a lot to the club, manager and the fans and I will respect their decision and will now concentrate on the new season ahead with Arsenal.
"I can assure all the fans that now the negotiations have ended I will be 100% focused on playing for Arsenal. I am an Arsenal player and as soon as I step out on to the pitch, that is the only club I will be thinking about. I am looking forward to the start of the season and putting this speculation behind me."
It is clear that Fabregas has just made his decision, or else he would have come out with it sooner than a week before the league begins. I believe Arsene Wenger is the main reason he stayed. Wenger signs young players and turns them into stars. He owes a lot to the club, and I didn't believe he would abandon the team that gave him a chance right before the season begins.
Obviously this news is a huge relief for manager Arsene Wenger. Here is Wenger on Fabregas: "He is our captain, he is our leader.
"You could see in the training session how much a lift it is for everybody who loves Arsenal. When I was at the World Cup I met so many people in South Africa and the first thing I heard was 'Don't let Fabregas go'. That means it is a huge lift for everybody who loves the club.
"The situation is as it is. I believe it is important in my job that I do not come out with private conversations I have with the players. That would be unfair. But Cesc has come out to clear the air. It was very important for us that Cesc did that clearly and that we can move on from now. We are one week away from the start of the season so just we want to be focused and settled now.''
It is great news that this situation is finally resolved and the Premiership is stronger because of it. If Cesc left North London, there may be one less team competing for the top spot.

Chelsea Agree to Ramires Deal
Chelsea have agreed to pay €22 million for Brazilian Midfielder Ramires. The deal was announced in a Benfica statement. Ramires has made 16 appearances for Brazil in international competition. Chelsea have been looking to bolster their midfield and this may do the trick.
Here is the statement from Ramires' former club Benfica (acquired from skysports.com): "Benfica has reached agreement in principle with Chelsea for the transfer of Ramires for a fee of 22 million euros."
"The agreement will be finalised once the player undergoes medical examinations."
Once Ramires clears his medical examination he can join Chelsea, hopefully in time for Sunday's Community Shield match against Manchester United. Ramires will join Frank Lampard, Deco, Michael Essien, Youssi Benayoun, Florent Malouda, et al. in the Chelsea midfield. A pretty stacked midfield for the defending champions.

Canadian and Middle East Group Close to Buying Liverpool
Anfield (uploaded by comedy_nose on Flickr) |
A group of Canadian and Middle East businessmen headed by Yahya Kirdi are reportedly close to buying Liverpool from current owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks. Liverpool is in massive debt, owing the Royal Bank of Scotland around £237 million. Here is Kirdi on the negotiations (all quotes aquired from BBC.com):
"Agreement has been reached on all major terms including the purchase price, repayment of the existing bank debt and financing of a new stadium in Liverpool's Stanley Park.
"
A formal purchase agreement between the parties is in the final stage of negotiation. With additional money to improve the squad and financing in place to build the new stadium, LFC will be on a solid foundation to compete in the Premiership and in Europe for years to come."
A change of ownership is imminent at Liverpool, not only because of the debt, but also because of the planning of a new stadium. Whoever takes over the team will more than likely pay off the debt and finance the new stadium, but how much will that leave them to pay their players as they try to recover from a disappointing campaign last year?
Fulham Boss Confident in Team
New Fulham manager Mark Hughes is confident that he can build on the team's success the last few years. Fulham finished 12th in the Premiere League last season under now Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson. Hughes believes he can make Fulham a top-10 team every year.
Hughes (all quotes acquired from BBC.com): "We want to make sure that Fulham is a top-10 club on a regular basis, which hasn't been the case in recent times."
"It's not my intention to allow the better players to leave. [However] I think it's fair to say that we need more attacking options. The way I set my team up, I think that will lend itself to the work Roy put in place."
It is clear that Hughes would like to bring a few attacking players to Craven Cottage. I would not be surprised to see Fulham make a move or two before the end of the transfer window.

Torres Commits to Liverpool
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres (uploaded by Nigel Wilson on Flickr) |
After winning the world cup with Spain, albeit a disappointing performance personally, striker Fernando Torres has ended the rumors that he is unhappy at Anfield. Speculation arose about Torres after Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League last season and the departure of manager Rafa Benitez. Man City and Chelsea were linked with Torres, and maybe even move to Spain.
Today, Torres ended those rumors by saying he is happy at Liverpool and that they are the best team in the country. I don't know about that, but here is what Fernando had to say:
"This is the best club in the country so the targets and expectations are always high. Hopefully we can stay at our level. At Liverpool the aim is to fight for every title. It was difficult last season, but we are sure we can improve this season.
"I am really happy to be back, really happy to stay with all my team-mates. My commitment and loyalty to the club and to the fans is the same as it was on my first day when I signed.
"I am looking forward to the challenge ahead."
Here is Torres on his new boss Roy Hodgson:
"I really appreciated the fact that Roy came out to see me while I was on my holidays. He told me about his plans for the club and what he wanted from me and I appreciated that.
"I hope he will be the right man to reach the targets of Liverpool Football Club and I am really looking forward to working with him. At the moment I am training just on my own but as soon as I can I will train with the team and with the new manager."
This is great news for all Liverpool supporters, as Torres will be a key player if they can break back in to the top three. It is great to see a fan favorite end transfer speculation so his team can focus in the little time left before the start of the season. It would be nice if a certain teammate on the World Cup-winning Spain team could do the same.

Latest on Fabregas
Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has been linked with Barcelona since this transfer window opened. It seems likes the Spanish star would like to return to Barca, where he he progressed through the youth academy. Arsene Wenger wants Cesc to stay in North London and help the Gunners arise to the top of the table. Arsenal has turned down lucrative sums to keep Fabregas, but a decision must be made by the player himself.
Wenger believes that Cesc will continue to play for Arsenal, but he believes Fabregas has to put an end to the Barca rumors. ''In the last six months, this story has made our lives difficult,'' Wenger said. ''At the moment, what is important is that when Cesc comes back, that he comes out. For me, I have nothing more to add.
"I cannot master what is written in the newspapers, I can only master our decisions. Cesc has five years to go [on his contract] and that's it. ''The speculation does not stop - who can stop the speculation? Only Cesc, that is how I feel. We cannot go into a season where every day you read about that. He has not played today, we have just played a football game and I sit here speaking about Fabregas.
"Barcelona have given up for a long time. I told you yesterday that what will happen is that Fabregas will stay here.''
Arsenal have already turned down 30£ million for Fabregas, and clearly Wenger is annoyed at his skipper for not finally denouncing these rumors and committing to Arsenal. If Fabregas chooses to force his way out of the club, the Gunners will be left with a huge hole to fill before the season begins.
Lionel Messi and Carlos Puyol, Barca players and teammates of Cesc on the Spanish national team, believe that Cesc will be playing in Camp Nou soon enough.
"I hope that the matter can be resolved soon," Messi said. "and I'm confident that in the end it will be resolved in the way that Cesc can be a Barcelona player."
While fellow Arsenal midfielder Denilson believes that ultimately Fabregas will decide to stay with the team. He believes that Cesc is happy in England, despite what those in Spain have said.
Denilson: "The problem is that because everyone [there] keeps saying, 'Oh, Cesc wants to go, Cesc wants to go', then everyone here also starts to think, 'Oh, Cesc wants to go'. I believe in Cesc Fabregas and this season he will be here to help us.
"We need him. He is our captain and he will help us a great amount this season. I haven't had a chance to catch up with him as he has been on his holidays, but we are expecting him this week and I will see him again in training."
Arsenal title hopes may reside with the decision Fabregas makes. He is the captain and key playmaker on the team. If he goes to Barca, Cesc will play but will have stiff competition in the stacked midfield. With less than two weeks until Arsenal open up against Liverpool, we will all await his decision.
